A classic seaside resort which blends all the history and charm of Britain’s best loved family destinations with a vibrant social scene and boundless visitor attractions, Brighton is well placed to provide superb horseracing too. Situated on Race Hill, some two miles from the centre of town, the course offers great views over Brighton and out to sea and with recent developments which include a brand new Grandstand with first class facilities, Brighton races form as much a part of the appeal of this famous town as all the other attractions.
The track at Brighton is unusual in that rather than a complete circuit; it forms an open-ended horseshoe shape, one of only three courses in the country along with Epsom and Newmarket which feature an open-ended track.
The shape is not the only challenge presented to horses, with a mile and a half of undulating surface being the main concern. In addition there is an unpredictable camber on the turn and so this is a course not for the feint hearted and requires skill, experience, and good balance. Typically course specialists do well at Brighton races but surprises are common and there is often thrilling close finishes.
Brighton is a flat racing venue and hosts 19 fixtures over the course of the season. Notable fixtures include the Big Day Out in July and the August Festival which is a three day event comprising the John Smith’s Brighton Mile and the social highlight of any racing calendar, Ladies Day.
Summer racing is perfect for a course situated in one of the great summer hotspots and it is easy to incorporate a day at Brighton races into a holiday or short break. The quality of racing is high and with a friendly atmosphere too, Brighton is equally popular with keen and casual racegoers.
